Green growth provides a means by which economic, environmental and social goals can be simultaneously achieved. It presents an opportunity to make existing industries more sustainable while at the same time encouraging new industries and a diversified economy.
Achieving a green and inclusive economy will be critical for tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. SMEs will play an indispensable role in achieving this economic transformation due to the large share of global business they represent. Accounting for about 99% of enterprises in OECD countries, SMEs also employ a significant share of people, especially in low-income countries, where they contribute to, on average, 78% of employment compared to 65% in high-income countries.
Due to their large numbers, the very diverse nature of their businesses and their typically small number of employees, the barriers to greening the operations of SMEs are generally more complicated to overcome than those for larger companies.

How do we tackle the fastest growing waste stream on the planet?
While digitalisation is bringing numerous benefits, it's also causing an unprecedented wave of e-waste. This is dangerous because e-waste contains a number of toxic components hazardous for the environment and human health.
However, e-waste is often rich in precious minerals, including gold, silver, platinum and copper. Right now, electronics companies spend a fortune buying and processing precious and rare minerals, only to see them buried in landfills.
We must start reusing, refurbishing or recycling e-waste. It is both strategic - is a world of resource scarcity and growing demand - as well as environmentally friendly since it could avoid tonnes of emissions.

Food waste. Many of us believe this type of waste is not harmful to our environment. It is organic right? So, it will be absorbed by nature as many of us believe. Plastic waste, however, is harmful, and we should not pollute our environment with single-use plastic items. Much media attention is given to this plastic waste subject around the globe. But sending just 1kg of food waste to landfill, produces the same carbon emissions as landfilling a staggering 25,000 500ml plastic bottles. When composing a waste management strategy, please take into account food waste.

Action to protect our environment is an investment for our future. As environmental degradation accelerates, even a partial collapse of our ecosystem would result in a 2.3% reduction in global GDP by 2030. The impact would be even greater for low-income countries, with real GDP expected to contract 10% annually during the same period.
Beyond the economic implications, there are social costs, which drive the true impact much higher. Effectively tackling climate issues requires co-ordination on a global scale. Having effective incentive structures and accountability mechanisms available will help to bring global co-operative efforts to fruition.

At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis has also demonstrated that inclusion and diversity matter more than ever. Therefore, embracing it as a core value is a must for a sustainable future of work.
