About this Discussion

Globally, the tourism industry already accounts for an average of 9% of nations’ GDP and is an important source of foreign exchange and foreign direct investment for many developing countries. Before COVID-19, the United Nations World Tourism Organization projected international tourist arrivals would increase from 1.1 billion in 2014 to 1.8 billion in 2030. For many developing countries, tourism is a key pillar of national development

However, the rapid growth in both international and domestic travel, the trends to travel farther and over shorter periods of time, and the preference given to energy-intensive transportation are increasing the non-renewable energy dependency of tourism, resulting in the sector’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.

To reverse this trend, the tourism sector can make a major contribution to the green economy through more sustainable practices, climate change mitigation and ecotourism. Greening the tourism sector allows tourism growth, environmental conservation and social well-being to be mutually reinforcing – with green tourism creating new, green jobs, supporting the local economy and reducing poverty.

Hello Everyone!

The Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) is a UNEP initiative that aims to accelerate the progress necessary to meet the 2030 Agenda, especially for SDG 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production) and SDG 8 (Decent Work & Green Economies).

We build partnerships to connect global initiatives with regional needs and solutions. We use a vast number and variety of tools developed by our partners and focus on implementation, action and scaling up, and replications of good practices. We are active in Africa, Asia-Pacific, LAC, West Asia and Central Asia.

GO4SDGs focuses on three main action components:

i) supporting governments to strengthen policy coherence.

ii) working with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to increase capacities and access for financing innovation and circularity.

iii) youth empowerment to amplify their voices and empower them to embrace sustainable lifestyles.

To achieve this, we collaborate with partners to share best practices, science-based knowledge, tools and capacity development in the high-impact sectors of agri-food, fashion/textiles, tourism (incl. plastics).

We are pleased to present our progress report with the highlights of work in 2022. We are advancing circular economy in the regions, increased capacity development to reduce food waste, and launched the SMEs Action Agenda, and the Green Jobs for Youth Pact at COP27. We also started to yield results in the high-impact sectors of fashion/textiles, agri-food & tourism.

I've just joined this forum. Tourism and hospitality is a global activity. My impression is that the first thing to do is change the mindset of smaller entrepreneurs within this area. Large tourist entrepreneurs should offer support for this to their (accepted?)destinations. Who's doing that already and how? We're very interested in working with this.

Food waste. Many of us believe this type of waste is not harmful to our environment. It is organic right? So, it will be absorbed by nature as many of us believe. Plastic waste, however, is harmful, and we should not pollute our environment with single-use plastic items. Much media attention is given to this plastic waste subject around the globe. But sending just 1kg of food waste to landfill, produces the same carbon emissions as landfilling a staggering 25,000 500ml plastic bottles.
When composing a waste management strategy, please take into account food waste.
