According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.
There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.
The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

To build ambitions and mobilize action for protecting Africa’s natural assets, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is hosting the high-level event, "The Value of Nature in Africa", on the 24th of August.
African, German and international leaders and experts will discuss what needs to be done to better recognize the value of nature in decision-making and demonstrate ambitions and actions to conserve the continent’s biodiversity and natural capital, use it sustainably and increase investments.

Human activities are indisputably causing climate change, making heatwaves, heavy rainfalls and droughts more frequent and severe; there's no going back from some changes in the system, however some could be slowed and others could be stopped by limiting warming - these are just two of five key take-aways from the new IPCC report released today.
What's new? The report provides an atlas of regional observed and future impacts, which will allow policy makers and all other stakeholders to better inform climate policies at the regional and local levels.

Major German corporate group sets the ambition to accelerate start-up solutions that remove carbon dioxide from the air via the newly launched EIT Climate-KIC ClimAccelerator carbon removal programme.
The EU Commission has presented its "Fit for 55" package to achieve the climate targets it tightened in April (55 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 by 2030, with climate neutrality in 2050).
These include changes in the EU emissions trading system for energy and industry, a second emissions trading system for buildings and road transport, stricter emission standards for cars, and blending quotas for green fuel for aviation and shipping. There are higher targets for the expansion of renewable energies and for energy efficiency as well as plans for carbon removal from the atmosphere, accompanied by a social fund and a border carbon adjustment.
How can it help the EU to achieve its goal?
"Global initiative to no longer accept ‘well below 2°C’ temperature targets!
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the global body enabling businesses to set emissions reduction targets in line with climate science, is unveiling a new strategy to increase minimum ambition incorporate target setting from ‘well below 2°C’ to ‘1.5°C’ above pre-industrial levels."

Hosting the Olympics, Tokyo has deployed a set of measures to help athletes cope with the heat this summer. This issue is obviously not unique to the capital of Japan - as the world gets warmer it helps to stay cool, but doing so also contributes to the climate crisis. Using air-conditioners is far from ideal, although chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were replaced by hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) as refrigerant in the 90s. Developed countries have begun phasing out HFCs in 2019 and developing countries will follow suit around 4 years from now. Is there an alternative way to produce cooling systems without problematic gases? Do you have relevant resources or projects to share on this topic?

The acceleration of Europe’s green energy transition is the challenge of the decade. Now it’s time to turn the Green Deal into reality and the European Commission is on it.
With the unveiling of the ‘Fit for 55’ legislative package, the European ‘green’ 20’s have officially started, with the climate package setting out the blueprint for the EU to become the world’s first mover on achieving net zero emissions.
