According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.
There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.
The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

A group of U.S. senators announced a new federal legislation that would require the biggest polluters — mostly mega-wealthy oil companies — to begin helping foot the bill to address the climate crisis. The Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act is based on a simple premise: Polluters should pay to help clean up their mess, and those who pollute the most should pay the most.

Water problems – drought, with its accompanying wildfires, and flooding – are likely to become much worse around the world as climate breakdown takes hold, according to the biggest assessment of climate science to date.

The sweeping report documenting the world’s changing climate released Monday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) puts a spotlight on China. The report, based on 14,000 studies, highlights the problems the country will face as the climate warms, from increased flooding and droughts to devastating cyclones. But it should also serve as a warning for the Chinese government to cut its emissions more rapidly, some climate policy experts say. Not only impacting the country itself, lagging on pledges to cut their output, China is responsible for more than 1/4 of the world’s annual CO2 emissions.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s first Working Group stated in the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report that the science underpinning climate change and finds many changes are IRREVERSIBLE.
The UK government’s spending plans on tackling climate change “don’t add up” to its ambitions, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has warned. A new Budget tagging tool being developed by WWF has also found that the government is not delivering on its climate promises, such as cutting emissions by 78% by 2035 and to zero overall by mid-century.
"July was the world's hottest month ever recorded, a US federal scientific and regulatory agency has reported.
The data shows that the combined land and ocean-surface temperature was 0.93C (1.68F) above the 20th Century average of 15.8C (60.4F).
It is the highest temperature since record-keeping began 142 years ago. The previous record, set in July 2016, was equalled in 2019 and 2020."

A new report by WWF reveals that 39 million jobs worldwide could be created if governments reallocated just one year’s worth of subsidies that harm biodiversity to a nature-positive stimulus instead. The biggest opportunity comes from the sustainable agriculture / food sector, accounting for nearly 30% of the total number of jobs created.
The recent 2021 World Bank Group/International Monetary Fund spring meetings took place during challenging times. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused loss of life and exacerbated global poverty and inequality, while draining governments resources. Meanwhile, the impacts of climate change are starting to be felt on a broad scale, resulting in the loss of homes, crops and livelihoods. The year 2020 was tied for the hottest on record and boasted, among other things, a record number of destructive storms crossing the Atlantic. On top of the long-lasting economic effects of the pandemic, the impacts of climate change are poised to only get worse.
