About this Discussion

According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.

There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.

The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

It is now clearer than ever that climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states that without additional efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, global warming is likely to exceed 2°C by the end of the 21st century.… Read More

"It would be useful to have clear information from the government on how to reduce the carbon we use." This is just one comment among many businesses in the UK who require government support with specific guidance to help them measure their carbon footprint.

A survey by the British Chambers of Commerce found that one in five businesses don't fully understand the term "net zero". Many SMEs in the UK still have no clue on how to work out their carbon footprint or where to start and mentioned a lack of finance as holding them back from improving their sustainability. It is interesting that the UK who has committed to speed up target to cut carbon emissions, particularly leading up to COP26, is still facing such challenges.

Do SMEs in other countries especially developing and least developed countries face similar if not bigger challenges to measure their carbon footprint? Share your experience!

Human-induced climate change is making heatwaves more likely and more severe, scientists say. The EU's Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) said the hot and dry conditions had hiked the danger of further fires.
CAMS monitors wildfires through satellites and ground-based observation statements, and said the emissions and intensity of wildfires are rapidly increasing in Turkey and Southern Italy.

"Many rural counties in the United States face the dual challenges of lagging economic growth and increasingly severe effects of climate change.

These challenges have been intensified by economic losses from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated existing inequalities and highlighted urgent infrastructure needs. At the same time, catastrophic wildfires, record heatwaves, drought and other severe weather events linked to climate change threaten rural communities and livelihoods."

Much of the infrastructure we install today will still be operating in 2050 as it's built to last, with a median typical lifetime of 27.5 years. Investing in the wrong infrastructure can result in “carbon lock-in”. Although multilateral development banks have been moving away from funding carbon intensive plants, in reality major economies continue funding 'carbon lock-in' abroad.

What is the difference between fossil fuels and renewable power plants with respect to carbon lock-in? Which countries are still investing in building new carbon-intensive infrastructure?

Peru – one of the 20 PAGE partner countries – stands at a crossroads.

Three-quarters of its workers are informal or self-employed. The country’s diverse natural resources – which serve as the backbone of its economy and labour market – are also under threat.

So what is it doing to change the script? How is it addressing labour challenges and ensuring decent employment for all while also promoting green jobs as part of a just transition?

Find out in the latest episode of #TheGreenRenaissance podcast, as we sit down for an open discussion with Katia Samanamud (Ministry of Labour for Peru) and Ana Belén Sánchez López (International Labour Organization).
