Green growth provides a means by which economic, environmental and social goals can be simultaneously achieved. It presents an opportunity to make existing industries more sustainable while at the same time encouraging new industries and a diversified economy.
Achieving a green and inclusive economy will be critical for tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. SMEs will play an indispensable role in achieving this economic transformation due to the large share of global business they represent. Accounting for about 99% of enterprises in OECD countries, SMEs also employ a significant share of people, especially in low-income countries, where they contribute to, on average, 78% of employment compared to 65% in high-income countries.
Due to their large numbers, the very diverse nature of their businesses and their typically small number of employees, the barriers to greening the operations of SMEs are generally more complicated to overcome than those for larger companies.

All eyes are on COP27 and financing the clean energy transition in emerging economies is high on the agenda.
To build the renewable energy infrastructure the world needs at speed and scale, circular economy will play a vital role like factoring circularity into the design stage. In the transition to clean energy, critical minerals bring new challenges to energy security. According to the IEA, getting to net zero by 2040 will require a six-fold increase in mineral input by 2040, some key metals, such a lithium, could see growth rates of over 40 times, with nickel and cobalt demand growing more than 20 fold.

How can we reshape the renewable energy industry, including EVs and batteries, to reduce the dependence on virgin critical materials in order to stem biodiversity loss and ecological degradation from unsustainable mining?

What's the deal with methane?
Colourless, odourless and invisible to the naked eye, methane is a potent greenhouse gas, responsible for more than 25 per cent of the global warming we are experiencing today.
Methane is released in the atmosphere by the energy sector (oil, gas, and coal), agriculture particularly from livestock such as cattle and waste, as bacteria break down organic matter in landfills.
Reducing methane emissions is possible and it would hugely contribute to reduce global warming in the short term. One way of doing it is shifting our diets toward more plant-based food and composting organic waste.

Colleagues, we share more information about the environmental performance trend in Guatemala, based on the analysis of the results of 296 self-diagnoses carried out by companies with operations in Guatemala.
In the methodology defined to measure the level of environmental performance of companies, we have considered 35 aspects, organized into 7 sections. In this graph you can see the note (on a scale of 0 to 100 points) of each one of the aspects, the color of the bar is the performance ranking that has been established, being 5 levels.
Below is a description of each ranking defined at the moment. At the moment the graph is in Spanish.
Red Ranking - High risk due to legal non-compliance, economic losses and environmental impacts.
Orange and Yellow Ranking - Moderate risk, corrective approach, high cost reduction potential by prioritizing prevention.
Green Ranking - Low risk, optimization of resources, opportunity to extend the scope of environmental management.
Blue Ranking - Ranking focused on environmental prevention and resource efficiency, solid technical and strategic foundations to establish a route focused on the Circular Economy.

Dear friends, the Cleaner Production Center of Guatemala launched the Environmental Performance Program in 2018. With this program we are supporting companies to carry out self-diagnoses via the web to identify advances and other opportunities identified in included in the methodology. of analysis. DDA tool (Diagnostics of Environmental Performance in Spanish) facilitates formulas to carry out self-diagnoses, in a practical way, quickly in generating automatic reports determining the performance ranking. We have updated the data obtained from 296 auto diagnostics for Guatemala, I hope that in the month of October we will publish a report with more detail, at the moment I share a couple of graphs where you can see the most important data in a summarized way,
