About this Discussion

According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.

There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.

The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

An exploration of what it could cost for a household to get to zero carbon: if this is of interest to anyone here, my company Zerofy has done some back-of-the-napkin calculations of what it could cost a European household to reach zero carbon. We've included two different scenarios, involving heat pump and EV use, solar energy production, both rooftop and co-op, and investing in wind.

We are interested in any feedback and thoughts on our approach and calculation!

Hi there,

I am undertaking a MSc Transformation Leadership Master’s Degree Apprenticeship with University College London. As part of this, I must complete a Research Project and I would like to invite you to support me by taking part in a survey that will contribute towards this research.

The aims of this seek to address attitudes towards Defence and their responsibilities to climate change and sustainability, understand how these influence Defence (their policies, decisions to act, influence on budgets, transparency of data and reporting), and develop an understanding of the risks Defence faces around this area. The project will result in an analysis of the key findings with suggested recommendations and next steps that Defence could take.

It should take you less than 10 minutes to complete. Thank you so much for your support.

Colleagues, we share more information about the environmental performance trend in Guatemala, based on the analysis of the results of 296 self-diagnoses carried out by companies with operations in Guatemala.

In the methodology defined to measure the level of environmental performance of companies, we have considered 35 aspects, organized into 7 sections. In this graph you can see the note (on a scale of 0 to 100 points) of each one of the aspects, the color of the bar is the performance ranking that has been established, being 5 levels.

Below is a description of each ranking defined at the moment. At the moment the graph is in Spanish.

Red Ranking - High risk due to legal non-compliance, economic losses and environmental impacts.

Orange and Yellow Ranking - Moderate risk, corrective approach, high cost reduction potential by prioritizing prevention.

Green Ranking - Low risk, optimization of resources, opportunity to extend the scope of environmental management.

Blue Ranking - Ranking focused on environmental prevention and resource efficiency, solid technical and strategic foundations to establish a route focused on the Circular Economy.

Dear friends, the Cleaner Production Center of Guatemala launched the Environmental Performance Program in 2018. With this program we are supporting companies to carry out self-diagnoses via the web to identify advances and other opportunities identified in included in the methodology. of analysis. DDA tool (Diagnostics of Environmental Performance in Spanish) facilitates formulas to carry out self-diagnoses, in a practical way, quickly in generating automatic reports determining the performance ranking. We have updated the data obtained from 296 auto diagnostics for Guatemala, I hope that in the month of October we will publish a report with more detail, at the moment I share a couple of graphs where you can see the most important data in a summarized way,

Central banks rarely feature in fiction, but Kim Stanley Robinson put them at the heart of his recent novel, The Ministry for the Future.

What could be a rationale for putting central banks at the heart of a near-future novel about climate change?

He says, "stabilising money requires stabilising the biosphere." Central banks as the creators and guarantors of money itself and banks can work towards climate and environment within their current mandate.

The search for “green materials” is fueled by a desire to protect the environment. Bio-based polymers have proven to be a viable alternative. Because of advancements in biorefineries and bioprocessing technology, their building blocks may now be derived from various biomass, by-products, and organic residues, reducing the demand for fossil fuel resources and lowering their carbon footprint. Novel bio-based polymers with significant added value and improved characteristics and functions have been created for use in a variety of industries. The actual benefits and concerns of such innovative bio-based plastic solutions, on the other hand, have heightened scientific and public awareness.
