Created a Post in Chemicals and Waste Management Community of Practice (CoP)
Welcome to the Chemicals and Waste Management Community of Practice!
The SAICM Secretariat is facilitating this Community of Practice (CoP) to host ongoing active discussions on issues of concern and chemicals of concern across diverse supply chains, capacity building and other relevant topics.
In 2020, SAICM established four CoPs – Highly Hazardous Pesticides, Chemicals in Products, Lead in Paint, and Chemicals and the Sustainable Development Goals – that have led successful knowledge exchanges.
While the activities of these communities came to an end in 2022, the SAICM Secretariat is continuing the momentum with a single, all-inclusive CoP on chemicals and waste management, in partnership with the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP).
On the SAICM websites, previous discussions on chemicals and waste management are still available.
We look forward to seeing you more often on the Green Forum to share your insights!
Tackling lead poisoning involves engaging a broader network of stakeholders and raising public awareness.
How are the needs and voices of the most vulnerable communities being integrated into global and local strategies?

What are the 'low hanging fruits' in addressing lead exposure?
Join us in an hour to discuss with a panel of experts including: • Angela Bandemehr, US Environmental Protection Agency • Mihaela Paun, UN Environment Programme • Elena Jardan, World Health Organization (WHO) • Francesca Cenni, Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions • Muhammed Omotola, UN Environment Programme • Sherika Ballingsingh, International Pollutants Elimination Network • Nafisatou Cissé, Lead Exposure Elimination Project
Despite significant progress, lead poisoning remains a serious threat around the globe, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where almost one in three children is still exposed to unsafe levels of lead, primarily from paint, toys & electronics.
How can the global community support safeguarding vulnerable communities from lead pollution?
What challenges do low- to middle-income countries face in drafting and implementing measures to curb damage from lead exposure?
On 30 October, join “Worldwide Voices: Perspectives in tackling lead” to learn more about lead poisoning and how to tackle it!
Created an Event in Chemicals and Waste Management Community of Practice (CoP)
During the Fifth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5), representatives from governments, the private sector, NGOs, intergovernmental organizations, youth, and academia came together to unanimously agree to establish the "Global Framework on Chemicals - For a planet free of harm and chemicals waste."
“Everyone on this planet should be able to live and work without fear of falling sick or dying from chemical exposure. Nature, free from pollution, should be able to thrive and support humanity for millennia to come,” — Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP)
With the adoption of the framework, it is encouraging to see pollution and waste being recognized at the same level as the crises of climate change and nature and biodiversity loss.
What was your take from the ICCM5 discussions and where do you think we can improve?
