What is National Implementation Plan? – Part 1

26 APR 2023

On 26 April 2023 (12:00-13:30 Geneva (CEST) (GMT +2)), Global NIP Update will host its first webinar targeting all stakeholders involved in the NIP update process to introduce project countries into the basics of National Implementation Plans and its role on the national level.

The Stockholm Convention (SC) on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from chemicals that remain intact in the environment for long periods, become widely distributed geographically, and have harmful impacts on human health and on the environment.

In accordance with Article 7, Parties to the SC are required to prepare a National Implementation Plan (NIP) explaining how they are going to implement the obligations under the Convention and make efforts to put such a plan into operation. NIP is a dynamic document to be reviewed periodically and updated to address the newly listed chemicals following the successive SC meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP).

This is the first webinar in the series of training activities to be held by the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) within the framework of Component 4 (Knowledge management and information sharing) to share the knowledge developed under Components 1 and 2 of the GEF project ID 10875 entitled “Global Development, Review and Update of National Implementation Plans under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants”.

As a part of knowledge-sharing activities, this webinar will provide Parties with the opportunity to share ideas on the importance of NIP, its role on the national level, the structure of the plan and the types of information to be reflected in its chapters.
