On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution at its seventy-seventh session to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste, to be observed annually. The first-ever International Day of Zero Waste is being celebrated on the 30th March 2023, with the aim to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, support the societal shift towards circularity and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Global Youth Event
The Global Youth Event for the International Day of Zero Waste - Towards a Zero Waste Future - What Does Global Governance Need? is a youth-led virtual event convened by youth constituencies aimed toward generating awareness on these topics and bridging the gap between action and voices from grassroots communities and policy making at the UN system.

The event will be held in a form of consultation, starting with keynote speeches from experts. It will:

• Spotlight the actions young people and organizations are taking already to achieve Zero Waste
• Discuss how the voices and solutions from grassroots groups, including Waste-Pickers, can be mainstreamed into the international policy-making; and
• Brainstorm what we need for global governance on waste to be more action-oriented to meet the ambition of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and upcoming Summit of the Future

The outcomes of the event will feed into the upcoming processes such as ECOSOC Youth Forum, BRS COPs 2023, Global Dialogues on SCP, UNEA preparatory process, World Health Assembly and ICCM-5 (SAICM) process.
