Michael Liu Created an Opportunity 1 year ago Call for Applications : UPOPs Awareness Campaign Closing: 24 May 2023 Consultancy Notice - UPOPs Awareness Campaign Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Caribbean(BCRC-Caribbean) The Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States (ISLANDS) programme seeks to address the sound management of chemicals and waste in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This ISLANDS programme covers four (4) geographical regions including the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Islands, and Atlantic Ocean Islands, and is being implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Caribbean (BCRC-Caribbean) is currently executing two (2) Caribbean Child projects (GEF 10279 and GEF 10472) which involve twelve (12) countries – Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The open burning of accumulated waste, particularly plastics/pipes, copper cable coating/housing, waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE), foams and synthetic carpets can lead to Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants (UPOPs) emissions. These emissions contaminate the air, soil, and sediments and like other Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) designated under the Stockholm Convention (SC) remain in nature for long periods. This class of hazardous chemicals tend to bioaccumulate in tissues of plants and animals and can cause harm to human health and the environment. Unfortunately, open burning of accumulated waste, is still widely practiced in many Caribbean countries, largely due to insufficient waste management infrastructure and a lack of awareness of the risks to human health and the environment. The main goal of this consultancy is to execute Activity 2.1.3 under the GEF ISLANDS Caribbean Projects to develop an awareness campaign for UPOPs and promote Best Available Technologies (BAT)/ Best Environmental Practices (BEP) to minimize UPOPs emissions and promote BEP to prevent and minimize UPOPs emissions from open burning in the Caribbean region. An integral part of this Activity is the proposed development of a mobile app for two (2) selected project countries. In this regard, the BCRC-Caribbean is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced consulting team to work with us on executing the project activity.
