According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.
There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.
The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

The direct climate impact of the coronavirus lockdown has lowered 2050 temperature projections by a “negligible” 0.01C, the UN has revealed.
A green economic recovery from the pandemic could, however, make a substantial difference, according to the UN Environment Programme (Unep) annual emissions gap report, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% over the next decade and putting the world on track to meeting the Paris agreement’s goal of keeping temperatures within 2C of pre-industrial levels.
New update from UNESCAP on 'Progress of NDC Implementation in Asia-Pacific'. Learn about Vietnam's new emissions trading scheme, Tbilisi's (Georgia) Sustainable Urban Transport Strategy, Bangladesh's Climate Trust Fund (BCCTF), Mongolia's more ambitious GHG emissions reduction target for 2030 (14 percent higher compared to the 2015 BAU scenario) and related renewable energy policy, and Fiji's use of green bonds for NDC implementation. Overall, countries have started to engage in implementing their NDCs and enhancing climate action, to varying degrees, but many are still in the early stages of creating the enabling framework conditions for successful climate action.
