According to the IPCC, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere is directly linked to the average global temperature on Earth, and the concentration has been rising steadily. The most abundant greenhouse gas, accounting for about two-thirds of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, is largely the product of burning fossil fuels.
There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed. One of the most urgent challenges facing countries across the world today is how to achieve economic prosperity and development while also combating climate change.
The Paris climate change agreement commits nations to limit global temperature rise to no more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with countries pledging to cut or curb their greenhouse gas emissions – through a combination of mitigation and adaptation measures – by 2030.

In case you missed it: this event 'Key Green Transitions: How Systems Are Changing for People and Planet' centered on the need to decarbonize key sectors of the economy that account for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including energy, transport and food systems.
Everyone deserves a sustainable future. But solutions are most urgently needed in developing countries, where the investment gap is deepest and people are most disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis.
'Nature-based Solutions for Adaptation Are Underfunded — But Offer Big Benefits' Nature-based solutions are key to advancing climate adaptation. But despite these extensive benefits, new research finds that as little as 1.5% of all public international climate finance has gone to support nature-based solutions for adaptation in developing countries.
Plants and animals that only live in one region – known as “endemic” species – are expected to be “consistently more adversely impacted” by climate change than their less specialised counterparts.

Africa Seeks $25 Billion for Climate Adaptation, Green Recovery -- The continent has already secured $12.5 billion from AfDB for a newly launched Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program and expects to secure the balance at the next two United Nations Climate Change Conferences. The Program seeks to establish a centralized body through which African governments, multilateral and bilateral institutions and donors can channel funds to organized adaptation initiatives on the continent.
