About this Discussion

Food and agriculture production systems worldwide are facing unprecedented challenges from an increasing demand for food for a growing population, rising hunger and malnutrition, adverse climate change effects, overexploitation of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, and food loss and waste. These challenges can undermine the world’s capacity to meet its food needs. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), more than 800 million people are undernourished while 2 billion are micronutrient deficient and 2 billion more people overweight or obese. At the same time, food production, transportation, processing and waste are putting unsustainable strain on environmental resources.

To be sustainable, agriculture must meet the needs of present and future generations, while ensuring profitability, environmental health, and social and economic equity. Greening the agricultural sector involves addressing poverty as well as meeting the nutritional needs of a growing global population while also minimizing the environmental degradation associated with certain agricultural practices.

Achieving these goals requires a transformation of the agriculture sector, leveraging market-based approaches through a coordinated effort by all stakeholders, including farmers, government, civil society and the private sector.

“Food systems” were responsible for 34% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions in 2015, according to new study published in Nature Food. This study presents the first database to break down emissions from each stage of the food chain for every year from 1990 to 2015. It also unpacks emissions by sector, greenhouse gas and country.

There’s a new WRI report out on Implementing Open Data —
* In Chile, the Center for Climate and Resilience Research uses open data to build nationally-relevant climate models and a platform for easy data access.
* Aclímate Colombia integrates data from several sources, including open government datasets, to help farmers understand and adapt to changing weather patterns, enabling research institutes and farmers’ associations to make better recommendations regarding planting dates, crop varieties, and other farm practices.
* In the aftermath of the 2016 Aceh earthquake in Indonesia, scientists, local and national government officials, and communities collaborated through the InaSAFE open data platform to identify risks to communities and infrastructure. The shared data and knowledge then equipped disaster managers to better prioritize response and recovery efforts.

In its mission to improve and strengthen African resilience to the challenges of climate change in the field of agriculture, and in accordance with its strategic plan 2020 - 2030, the pan-African and indigenous organization Climate Change Africa Opportunities (CCAO) has developed its enthusiasm for the development of climate-resilient agriculture in Africa.
Indeed, climate-resilient agriculture focuses on the three pillars of strengthening food security: (a) sustainable increase in production, (b) strengthening of resilience (adaptation) to climate change and (c) reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, where possible and appropriate.
Climate-resilient agriculture is not a set of practices; it is an approach of selection and implementation of agricultural practices, policies and services adapted to the context, in time and space, and integrated, so that they work together to maximize synergy and minimize tradeoffs. What works for one group of farmers - because of their location, culture and location - may not work for another group. This approach requires the evaluation of the impacts of an investment based on the biophysical, agricultural and socio-economic context of a given place.
This investment plan is a strategic and in-depth planning document allowing Climate Change Africa Opportunities (CCAO) to propose agricultural development projects with high potential and high quality which may be the subject of possible partnership links with partners. and donors involved in supporting the resilience of agriculture in the context of climate change in Africa.
