About this Discussion

In 2019, over 92 billion tonnes of materials were extracted and processed, contributing to about half of global CO2 emissions. This “take-make-dispose” approach and the resulting waste – including plastics, textiles, food, electronics and more – is taking its toll on the environment and human health.

A circular economy model replaces this end-of-life concept with restoration, shifts towards the use of renewable energy, eliminates the use of toxic chemicals, which impair reuse and return to the biosphere, and aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems and business models. The circular economy approach improves resource efficiency and reduces environmental impact on natural capital by designing products in a more recyclable way, adopting efficient technology and turning waste into a resource. The circular economy offers a trillion-dollar opportunity in terms of possible material savings, innovation and job creation, improved land productivity and soil health, and green growth. Achieving this, however, requires strong collaboration between leaders from business, government and civil society.

Hello Everyone!

The Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs) is a UNEP initiative that aims to accelerate the progress necessary to meet the 2030 Agenda, especially for SDG 12 (Sustainable Consumption and Production) and SDG 8 (Decent Work & Green Economies).

We build partnerships to connect global initiatives with regional needs and solutions. We use a vast number and variety of tools developed by our partners and focus on implementation, action and scaling up, and replications of good practices. We are active in Africa, Asia-Pacific, LAC, West Asia and Central Asia.

GO4SDGs focuses on three main action components:

i) supporting governments to strengthen policy coherence.

ii) working with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to increase capacities and access for financing innovation and circularity.

iii) youth empowerment to amplify their voices and empower them to embrace sustainable lifestyles.

To achieve this, we collaborate with partners to share best practices, science-based knowledge, tools and capacity development in the high-impact sectors of agri-food, fashion/textiles, tourism (incl. plastics).

We are pleased to present our progress report with the highlights of work in 2022. We are advancing circular economy in the regions, increased capacity development to reduce food waste, and launched the SMEs Action Agenda, and the Green Jobs for Youth Pact at COP27. We also started to yield results in the high-impact sectors of fashion/textiles, agri-food & tourism.

Hello everyone,
I'm a new member looking for help with my master thesis (which I hope is within your okay in this forum).

I have been reading various interesting posts, which makes me believe that you all have a lot to contribute with, if you feel up for it.

I'm doing a research project focusing on consumer's perception towards the concept of obsolescence / planned obsolescence, specifically in household level electronic devices. Thus, everyone with an opinion, experience, or even just owning an electronic device is interesting to me!

As the main method used is netnography, everything is expected to happen online, preferably in written format. It can even be an open discussion right here, if wanted.

So, if you would like to answer a few question as an “interview”, share opinions and experiences, or just have any question to me or my study. Please let me know!

In advance, thank you very much.

Best regards.

Science is absolutely essential to ways in which the world can change for the better but, above all, it is our common belief in the future that will keep us on track.

In my own experience, there have been moments when the idea of the Blue Economy - action to ensure the health of the ocean, the political will to reduce global warming, the need to have a planet in balance to ensure the survival of life - have shone brightly, and other times when our actions or inactions have dimmed the lights. In bad times, as well as good, I have been sustained by my conviction of how much better things can be.

I have always have hope and believed in the wisdom of humanity to work towards a better future for all and ensure that we do not chose the path towards self- extinction.

Plastic waste to diesel conversion is a great example of waste to energy in circular economy, the only thing to consider is to devise plastic waste management procedures by developing Cooperatives at community level and developing a mechanism of inclusive green growth management.
