Chemicals and Waste Management Community of Practice (CoP)

Pinned post

Welcome to the Chemicals and Waste Management Community of Practice!

The SAICM Secretariat is facilitating this Community of Practice (CoP) to host ongoing active discussions on issues of concern and chemicals of concern across diverse supply chains, capacity building and other relevant topics.

In 2020, SAICM established four CoPs – Highly Hazardous Pesticides, Chemicals in Products, Lead in Paint, and Chemicals and the Sustainable Development Goals – that have led successful knowledge exchanges.

While the activities of these communities came to an end in 2022, the SAICM Secretariat is continuing the momentum with a single, all-inclusive CoP on chemicals and waste management, in partnership with the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP).

On the SAICM websites, previous discussions on chemicals and waste management are still available.

We look forward to seeing you more often on the Green Forum to share your insights!

The IOMC workshop on “Advancing Chemicals and Waste Management in Chemical Intensive Economic Sectors and Industries” took place from 17-18 January 2023, in Paris, hosted by OECD. In Paris, valuable initial discussions took place on guiding principles for industry strategy development, as well as the elements and activities of a possible “Beyond 2020” Implementation.

As a follow up, on 20-21 June 2023, in Geneva, IOMC is holding "Multi-stakeholder Expert Workshop on Advancing Chemicals and Waste Management in Economic Industry Sectors".

The two-day workshop will discuss draft guiding principles to support economic sector and industry strategies throughout supply and value chains, and explore the elements and activities of a possible Implementation Programme under “Beyond 2020”.

Stephani Widorini commented on Kim Schoppink's Post in Chemicals and Waste Management Community of Practice (CoP)

Dear all, At the Rainforest Alliance we are working with farmers to phase-out their use of highly hazardous pesticides. This is not always easy, but much more often possible then many farmers, companies and governmental policymakers believe. We therefore wrote this report with accompanying video on how our farmers succesfully phased-out one of the deadliest pesticides; paraquat. Sadly its use is still widespread, with our story we hope to convince companies and governments that we can and need to phase it out. Please share it and reach out if you would like to know more.
