To all the new members, thanks for your participation to our webinar yesterday and welcome to the mercury community!

Please feel free to introduce yourself, we would love to hear from you!

? My name is Clara, I come from Italy ?and I work at ISLANDS ?
? What I would like to learn about mercury is the regulation around it, especially in SIDS. As someone else was asking during the webinar yesterday, how is it possible that dental amalgam containing mercury is still legal in certain countries - mercury being one of the most toxic elements on the planet?

Looking forward to learn together with you and in case you missed the event yesterday check out the video below!

It always surprises me how much mercury there is still present in everyday processes and products, especially when we know the harm it can cause to health and the environment. In some Small Island Developing States (SIDS), it is used in processing gold and fossil fuels and is also present in everyday products like fluorescent light bulbs and a range of medical waste.

The good news is that the dangers of mercury, in particular methylmercury, are well known and there are major global initiatives at work to manage it such as the Minamata Convention. Minamata is the name of a city in Japan in where thousands were poisoned following the release of mercury tainted industrial wastewater into the bay, where it entered the food chain.

To find out more about how SIDS are managing and experiencing the reality of mercury in their environment join the ISLANDS Programme webinar - Sharing SIDS experiences on the Minamata Convention on the 14th December at 21:00 GMT. Click the link to register and join.

New PlanetGold Project launched in Uganda - aiming to reducing and / or eliminating the use of mercury in artisanal gold mining.

Artisanal and small scale gold mining (ASGM) is is a source of revenue for many and an opportunity for economic development. However, the use of mercury in ASGM puts at risk the health of the workers - many of which are women (45%).

Women are particularly at high risk of exposure because often engaged in the processing and washing stages, where exposure to mercury is high.

Happy to see that Uganda is taking acton on Mercury and looking forward to follow the project though the years!
