Chemicals & Sustainable Development

Modern society’s reliance on chemicals for virtually all manufacturing processes make chemicals production one of the major sectors of the global economy. However, this reliance comes with costs: heavy use of water and energy and potential adverse impacts on the environment and human health.

The diversity and potential severity of such impacts make sound chemicals management a key cross-cutting issue for sustainable development. However, an effective mechanism for joint action for the majority of chemicals that have yet to be covered by existing multilateral environment agreements such as the BRS Conventions - is yet to come.

It is against this backdrop that delegates to the fourth session of the Intersessional Process for Considering the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste Beyond 2020 (IP4) advanced their work toward a future framework on chemicals and waste.

The resulting “zero draft” document covers the vision, scope, principles, strategic objectives, targets, institutional arrangements, implementing measures, financial considerations, and procedures to guide global efforts for years to come.

Hi Ginny Mckinney from the Bahamas hoping to learn from other island activists as to how they are tackling waste management. We run an aluminium can recycling programme to raise funds for kids but most other recycling has'nt happened yet. Our close proximity to the US makes it easier for us once we have our act together with collectiing and processing the recyclates for shipment. But getting it going even though we are also a small population is harder than one thinks. Look forward to hearing others views and solutions. I've attached a leaflet we developed as we campaign residents to get their buy-in.

Women are central in advancing SIDS’ clean energy development

Women are a driving force for SIDS’ clean energy development and for building islands’ resilience to climate change. However, in many SIDS, they face barriers in becoming active participants in climate action. For example, rural women are largely responsible for managing household energy, and can play a major role in the adoption of clean household solutions. And are therefore, a key component of the sector's sustainability and must be fully integrated in the decisions and solutions related to the clean energy sector.

Read the article to find out more about why more women are not taking a leading role in the energy sector – and what needs to be done to address the imbalance.
